File to tape backup strategy

Post by rimvydukas »

Hi,
I plan to create file backup to tape job against Veeam backup repository folder. So am I right by saying that at the same time incremental job will archive full backup vbk files?

And another thing - what good backup strategy could you recommend for the tape library with one drive and limited amount of tapes, f.e. 8 16TB tapes. Backup repository is somewhere about 80tb used and backup jobs are mainly incremental with 14 restore points and synthetic fulls on each weekend.

Thanks.

Re: File to tape backup strategy

Hello,
what is the reason of using "file to tape" instead of "backup to tape"? In general, I would always go for the "backup to tape", because it's easier to manage.
So am I right by saying that at the same time incremental job will archive full backup vbk files?
I'm not sure, I really understand the question. But yes, the incremental file-to-tape tape copies everything since the last file-to-tape job. If there is a new / changed VBK, then it will also copy that new VBK file

The tape strategy depends on the business needs. Many customers do daily increments and weekly full backups to tape.

Best regards,
Hannes
