GFS Media Sets

Hi

We have been using Standard tape Media sets for a number of years and are now in a state where we want to use a single GFS media set. The options for the GFS media set are different to standard. For the standard media set we have one configured to create a new set weekly for daily tape backups and we have another media set also configured to create a new set weekly and this is used for full tape backups. It looks like the GFS media set will create a new set daily for the daily tape backups. Is that correct? That will be a lot of tapes that we would need.

I have suggested that we may need to create a standard media set for daily and possibly weekly tape backups and then use the GFS media set for the monthly tape jobs.

And advice on this?

A minor correction:

By default, the Daily media set in GFS Media Pools is configured with the "Append" option, meaning the tapes in the Daily Media Set will be continued unless one of the conditions on the bottom of this page is met and the media set is forcibly closed. The elder Media Sets (Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly) do not Append by default and create a new media set each GFS period. (Though this can be changed to Append to the previous media set on the same part of the GFS Media Pool Wizard)

Having a mixture of Tape Jobs with Standard and GFS media pools is fairly common, using the Simple for a shorter term tape protection period and GFS for archiving purposes, but you can also accomplish this just with the Daily Media Set in a single GFS Media Pool.
