Hi,
we plan to migrate all of our tape backup jobs to Veeam.
But based on the documentation GFS is not available for file to tape backups.
Our required scenario:
One backup job, which does:
daily backup (incremental), retention 30 days
weekly backup (full), retention 4 weeks
monthly full backup, retention 12 months
We struggle with the monthly full backup at the job level, because we cannot set a GFS tape media pool as destination. So we have two pool with the daily and weekly retention for that job.
So we went for a separate monthly full backup job with a media pool with retention 12 months.
Unfortunately we recognized that the Veeam TB file backup license does not count overall backuped up storage but instead is counted per job.
We would need twice the TB storage license as we really have data ( x TB for daily/weekly job and x TB for monthly job)
Moving one weekly full backup to a media pool having the retention of 1 year seems also no option, as on moving the tape is erased.
Thanks on your ideas,
Thomas

Re: GFS no available for file tape backup brings us a not nice licensing issue
Hello Thomas,
Thank you for your feedback, GFS for file to tape engine is a high priority for us! Meanwhile, can you please clarify if it's possible to use NAS backup to disk and backup to tape after that? Such approach could save your license counters since the backup to tape job does not require any licenses. Thank you!

Re: GFS no available for file tape backup brings us a not nice licensing issue
Hi,
it's a Windows file server, so I think NAS backup wouldn't be available? Additional we choose backup directly to tape to not store the data again in a local repository, as we don't have the space for it.
So, no solution for us in the meantime? Workaround, hacks via Powershell?
Best,
Thomas

Hello Thomas,
Unfortunately there is no workaround for File to tape that does not involve other job types at the moment. Added your vote to this feature request!
