Hardware compression with file to tap

Post by redhorse »

Hello,

I want to store about 1,2 TB to Tape with a file to tape Job with enabled hardware compression. These files were restored with Backup Exec and there was a compression of 1,5:1. Now the Backup of the same files with Veeam is just 1:1 to LTO5 with Dell TL2000.

Why is there no compression, is this correct?

What files you're talking about? Are those backup files previously taken with Veeam? In case of BE, are you using software compression as well as hardware one? How did check the compression level with Veeam? Just checked job statistics or checked the space those files occupied on media? Thanks.

These are typical files form a file server (many small files about 200-300 KByte). The backup was previously taken with BE, then restored and now to tape with Veeam. It is just hardware compression enabled (BE and Veeam), I see in the joblog that "proccessed", "read" and "transferred" is the same and the data on tape is also the same.

If hardware compression is used, we don't reflect the real number in our statistical data. So, you should check the tape itself to see how much space is occupied in reality. Thanks.
