Hi
We are onboarding a new customer that currently uses VEEAM to backup their data. During the transition we will be only getting their physical tapes that were made using VEEAM.
We need to create an environment in which we can just restore historical data from those tapes. Can somebody tell us what we need in this case?
I would say at least a Physical Server that runs VEEAM, is a Tape Server, has a Tape Unit attached to it. But will this new VEEAM instance (we for now do not have a config backup) be able to read those foreign tapes and restore data from those tapes? If so do we need to inventory all the tapes, or just the tape we "think" the data is on in case a restore is needed? Any clue how long it takes to inventory a tape new to the VEEAM instance (if that's possible). Do we need a license just for restoring data? We are not using this instance to backup any data.
Any input can help!

Re: Historic restores from tape from foreign VEEAM instance
Hello Karl,
You can spin new blank Veeam B&R server and install tape server role to the same machine, then connect tape device to this server. Next step is to catalog the tapes to recognize the content of the media and add it to Veeam B&R databases, but when it's done you customer can perform recovery from tape. Cheers!

Re: Historic restores from tape from foreign VEEAM instance
Hi Dmitry,
Thanks for the reply! Will we need a license to do this? Or can we do it without? The VEEAM instance will not be used to backup anything.

License is not required for recovery from tape.
