Re: How to share a tape library between two backup solutions

Post by veremin »

Hi, Titou,
I have error message.
What kind of errors do you get?
Who knows please ?
Generally speaking, it’s not possible to make both applications operate simultaneously with one drive/library, as one application or the other will lock the corresponding drive/library.

If you’re going to use Veeam as your primary tape backup solution, then, you have to stop Symantec services, and delete the Symantec specific drivers, if any are installed. Otherwise, you can implement the abovementioned key in order to keep VB&R from performing rescan operation.

Thanks.

Just to let you know, the corresponding key was added in Veeam B&R v7 R2 update:
Veeam B&R v7 R2 release notes wrote:• Added ability to disable tape device rescan completely with the DisableTapeSubsystem (REG_DWORD) registry key. This can help in situations when the same tape devices is shared between multiple backup solutions.

Does the DisableTapeSubsystem also go in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\VeeaM\Veeam Backup and Replication hive? Do you give it value "1" to disable the tape subsystem?

[MERGED] Share same tape server between Veeam and legacy so

Post by tinto1970 »

Hi everyone,

we are asking if we can operate in this scenario:

A physical server (win 2008R2) has three Dell libraries attached. In this machine is installed and runs a legacy backup sw (ARCserve).
Veeam B&R runs on a separate, virtual machine (2008r2)

Can we use Library 1 and 2 with ARCserve, and Library 3 with Veeam B&R?
I've tried adding the physical server in Veeam, it worked, but the Library 3 is often reported as "in use", even if ARCserve don't writes on it.

Hi Alessandro,

You need to add the tape library 3 to a dedicated server to avoid the situation when 2 services using same library. Please read the thread for additional info and ask additional questions if you have any. Thanks!
