HP Tapelibary and incremental backups to tape

Post by bhyujn »

Hello,

I have HP tape library (24tapes)
I would like to use files to tape backup.
Monthly full backup + daily incremental.

LTO7 native size is 6TB.
If my daily incremental backup is about 950GB, then first 6 daily backups will go to first tape and then Veeam start writing to next tape?

Hello Bhyujn,

Could you please let us know what kind of data you'd like to archive to tapes? What's your use-case?

Thanks

1) MS-SQL server make daily dumps to VBR server fileshare.
2) VBR write dump files tape
3) Script deletes dump files.

At the moment i'm using Symantec Backup Exec (this kind of backup schema works)

NB! Client of mine don't want to use Veeam for backing up MSSQL.

While I do not think this is the best approach, in this particular case, file to tape could be the correct choice. Returning back to the initial question, the outcome behavior depends on the configuration of Media Pool, Media Set specifically.

In order to make it work you need to setup either 'Do not create, always continue using current media set' (to force the job to use current tape till it's full) or 'Daily at' (to instruct the job when it should start using new tape media and close the existing tape) media set creation option in the media pool properties. Cheers!
