im sometimes stuck with jobs not overwriting the tape

Post by itsecasc »

Hello,

Set Up: Veeam B&R Running on a Physical Computer with one HP Ultrium 6 attached and Built in direct attached Storage
Goal: a Daily reverse incremental Backup Job backups to the direct attached storage in the Veeam B&R Server. After Completing this job - the Tape Job should put a(the) latest full backup to the tape
Condition: simply overwrite tape no matter which and transfer everything from the last job to the tape

tapes get swapped daily by hand
there are 4 weekday tapes: MON/TUE/WED/THU
there are 3 weekly tapes: FR1/FR2/FR3
there are 3 month tapes: M1/M2/M3

every day a person brings a single tape according to the day of the week from an external physical vault (safe), takes out yesterdays tape and puts in todays tape and taking the yesterdays tape offsite.
((ofc mondays the firday tape gets taken out))

this might not be the most practical way - but it is what it is and what the customer asked for.
i do struggle with how to set this straight up.
right now - tuesday i see following "waiting message"
19.03.2019 19:43:28 :: Add tape to media pool normal (HP Ultrium 6-SCSI (XX-WIS001)). Oldest retained tape: Monat 3. Last written tape: unbekannntesband
it looks like B&R finished the MON tape job after the TUE tape got put in because the MON tape was used 70% ish last week so i guess this week MON tried to fill the last 30%, still had backupdata, ejected and cont'd after TUE got put in.
19.03.2019 06:06:22 :: Drive 1 (Server: XX-WIS001, Library: HP Ultrium 6-SCSI, Drive ID: Tape0) locked successfully
19.03.2019 06:06:22 :: Current tape is MON
19.03.2019 06:06:26 :: New tape backup session started, encryption: disabled
19.03.2019 06:06:55 :: Processing full backups started at 19.03.2019 06:06:08
19.03.2019 06:06:56 :: Processing MAIN-VMs_C55FD2019-03-07T190535.vbk
19.03.2019 12:15:56 :: Tape MON is full
19.03.2019 12:16:43 :: Tape currently in drive cannot be used for backup
19.03.2019 12:16:43 :: Ejecting tape MON from Drive 1 (Server: XX-WIS001, Library: HP Ultrium 6-SCSI, Drive ID: Tape0)
19.03.2019 12:16:43 :: Tape 'MON' ejected successfully
19.03.2019 12:16:43 :: Add tape to media pool normal (HP Ultrium 6-SCSI (XX-WIS001)). Oldest retained tape: Monat 3. Last written tape: MON

19.03.2019 13:26:15 :: Continuing backup session for Full backup set 19.03.2019 06:06:23
19.03.2019 13:26:33 :: Continuing task for D:\Backup\BACKUP-MAIN-VMs\MAIN-VMs_C55FD2019-03-07T190535.vbk
19.03.2019 15:41:36 :: 0 folders and 2 files have been backed up
19.03.2019 15:41:36 :: Busy: Source 94% > Proxy 6% > Network 23% > Target 44%
19.03.2019 15:41:36 :: Primary bottleneck: Source
19.03.2019 15:41:36 :: Network traffic verification detected no corrupted blocks
19.03.2019 15:41:36 :: Processing finished at 19.03.2019 15:41:36
because monday did not get overwritten but appended, so now tue got used and ejected too early
and tomorrow when they load WED tape the TUE bakup finishes because its still waiting and so on and forth downward spiral
