Mediaset rotation with full + incremental backups

Post by Glasofruix »

Hey there,

I have a little question about the logic behind media sets/backup rotation. I've had to implement a tape backup a few months back with a tape library while it's not exactly my area of expertise and i'm doubting my logic.

So basically the person in charge wants a different set of tapes per week in case he decides to take the tapes out of the library. I've set it up as such, at least i think so, but i have a few problems with that. Mainly because there is a (relatively fast) wan connection between the main site and the backup site, so the backups have to run during inactive hours in order to not to hog the bandwitdth during the day. Most of the time the backups run fine during the night and follow the logic, but some other days for some reason veeam just decides to go full and spends two days copying files during busy hours, which is a tad inconvenient. My backups are set as such:

Main backups:
- Full backup on friday evening, incrementals from mon to thu in the evenings, no backups on week-end
- Everything's on forward incremental

Tape backups:
- 15 LTO9 tapes
- New mediaset every friday morning (before the main full)
- Incremental backups on the same media pool

The logic behind it would mean a fresh media set is created on a friday, full backups are stored after the main full then during the week incremental backups would remain on the same media set so i would have those sets separated into week 1, week 2 etc... What am i missing here? Is it because i have an odd number of tapes (usually it takes two tapes for a full week)?

Is this a main problem? Just check your schedules...
What type of tape job do you have? Do you first backup to NAS and then to tape as a secondary job?

Yes it is a problem. According to the schedules it should do a full on fridays only and incrementals the rest of the week. But for some reason it migh do a full on monday or on another day of the week on top of the friday one.

The first backup goes to a datadomain then the tape job does a back up of the latest restore points.

Does this job run as expected (fulls only fridays)? Is tape job scheduled to run after backup to datadomain job?

Yes, the jobs to the datadomain perform as they should and the tape jobs are scheduled afterwards.
