Offline Tapes GFS Pool

Post by dspringer »

Hello everyone

We have recently started working with a GFS Media Pool. In our case, only weekly and monthly backups are collected there. All monthly ones are always stored directly after writing in a safe, as it should be. However, they still remain in this GFS pool and accordingly the number of offline LTO8 tapes grows by 4 pieces per month.

Since my inner Monk is currently calling again, I would like to ask the following question:
Can I simply move these monthly tapes manually into a separate media pool (for example with name "Safe_LTO8_GFS" and is it enough if this is then a standard media pool?

Hi

Update: Tapes will get marked free when moved to another Pool.
I recommend to use our Vault Feature to organize older tapes for visibility. You can also protect the gfs tapes, if you don't want to have them overwritten.

As I can see they are actually also shown in the already existing Vault and they will never be reused for any writing process.
My main focus is rather on whether a reference to the data stock of the tape remains nevertheless after the move and a restore is possible from there.
However, I suspect so, since the assignment to a media pool is surely rather secondary information at this point.

Hi David

I tested it in my lab. It seems, that the content get deleted. Do not move the tapes.
I will check he correct behavior and give you a feedback.

Update:
We have it documented in our helpcenter.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
IMPORTANT
When you move a tape to any media pool, Veeam Backup & Replication marks this tape as free.

Thx for your fast reply. If there is a problem here, I continue to suppress my inner visual dissatisfaction and leave everything as is.
After all, I'm also the only one in our department who might be bothered by it ;)

I'm sorry, I was not aware of that behavior before.
So I had to test it myself in the lab. If I loose data in the lab, it's not that bad :)

Another update, the tape just get marked free.
If not already overwritten by another job, it can be catalogized and the content is available again in Veeam for a restore :)
