Hi Community,
We want to move backup to disk jobs to tape after a week. Now we are testing some restore szenarios and we figured out that our concept to restore single files from the tape seems not to be practicable. Is there another possibility to restore single files from a tape backup than to restore the complete VBK- or VBI-files? This can be a huge amount of data and probably needs a very long time.
The concept with backup files to tape instead has other problems. For example we have to add the servers as managed servers in the Veeam console and therefore the Backup to tape works over the network. But a LTO-6 or LTO-7 drive is much faster than a gigabit network, so the drive has to reduce the speed of the tape which is a) not recommended and b) wasting resources. Furthermore we have two independent backup szenarios (Backup to disk and backup to tape) what seems to be pretty much senseless.
Is there another possibility to handle restores from large backups than to restore the complete amount of data first? What did we overlook?
Thanks for reading and in advance & Bye Tom

Re: Restore Single Item From Tape
Hello Tom,
Single file restore from tape is possible only in case you are using file to tape jobs (backing up files to tape). For backup files (or backup to tape jobs) you have an option to restore backup to the staged repository (and then perform a file level recovery from disk) or restore a VM from tape directly to your VMware/Hyper-V host. Thanks!

Re: Restore Single Item From Tape
Hi Dima,
We'll (or have to) find a workaround but it would be nice if Veeam took the problem seriously, because it's really a serious problem. Maybe you have the opportunity to pass this as a feature request to the responsible department. Thank you.
Thx & Bye Tom
Oh, that's a real setback. File-to-tape backup over the network is a huge waste of tape device resources, as a LTO-7 drive is almost twice as fast as a gigabit network and when the drive needs to wait for data and go into a stop-and-go mode, the durability suffers enormously. On the other hand, it's nonsense to restore a multi-terabyte volume just to restore a single file. This is expensive and impractical, you should reconsider that please...Dima P. wrote:Single file restore from tape is possible only in case you are using file to tape jobs (backing up files to tape).
