Restoring databases from tape
Folks,
On this page...
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110
...it says that "Restore of databases from backups restored from tapes to the repository is not supported."
What does that mean, exactly? If I want to restore a certain database using "Restore application items -> Microsoft SQL Server databases..." from a backup done to tape, and restored to a repository, is that not possible? I want to restore a certain database from tape to a different SQL server than from where it was backed up, and thus not affecting the "live" production database. Or should I restore it as a guest file instead, and import it somehow in the temporary SQL server? As you might imagine, I am not a database guy...

Yeah, it looks like DB restore is not possible based on that link. I would restore the server disk or like you said the actual SQL DB file then attach it to a SQL server to use. Be sure to grab both the MDF (database) and LDF (logs) files for the restore.

Re: Restoring databases from tape
Hello,
The official support of restoring databases from backups restored from tapes is already planned and will be provided in one of our releases. So far, the workarounds suggested by Chris seem to be solid enough.
Thanks!

@PetrM could you clarify "the official support will be provided" please.
Are you saying we never supported such restores, which would be surprising?
Or is this a V11-specific regression?

Re: Restoring databases from tape
Hello Andrew,
The best idea for now is to restore the machine from tape to the infrastructure / lab and then recover the needed content for db manually. Investigating for a more elegant workaround, will follow up shortly. Thank you!

Re: Restoring databases from tape
Hello Andrew,
Can you please let us know how it goes in your setup if you:
1. Restore the backup from tape to Veeam repository
2. Remove the backup from Veeam B&R configuration
3. Import the backup file back to Veeam B&R console via import procedure but instead of selecting vbm, select the vbk file
4. See what options are available on the backup (if the application item recovery is available)?
Thanks!

Re: Restoring databases from tape
We've confirmed that application item recovery via Veeam Explorers should work correctly for any Veeam backup restored from tape media recorded by Veeam B&R.
The original issue is related to the Enterprise Manager: whenever backup is restored from tape special entries in the Enterprise Manager db are not populated with the information backup content (i.e. Enterprise Manager knows nothing about the application in the backup), as a result application item recovery via Enterprise Manager wont display such backup from application item recovery.
As a workaround for the issue: you can re-import the vbk file to the Veeam B&R console and that should make application item recovery via Enterprise Manager possible.
We plan to fix this behavior in next versions.
The mentioned misleading limitation from the Help Center will be corrected. Thank you for updating this thread and sorry for the confusion!
