Synthetic Full Backup then to tape, doubled in size

Post by iisics »

Dear all,

I found another bug from patch 2.

Background:

- 4 x ESXi Server
- 1 x DD2500
- All on FC connection
- 2 x Veeam Management Server with Proxy
- 2 x LTO5 Tape Drive (Standalone) FC
- Now using 2 x Veeam backup server, each of them connect 1 x tape drive. All backup to DD will finish first, then to tape. Each side backup data around 7TB.

Symptoms:
- When backup to DD, it needs to use "None" Compression, if not, backup to DD very slow (solved)
- When backup to tape, I have already chosen "Latest" but sometimes backup twice objects at a time. It makes backup to tape always fail as already over backup windows.
- When create the backup compression, the backup to tape speed become more ridiculous.

Questions:
- May I know what is the definition of "Latest"?
- How to improve the speed to tape?
- If can't improve, I need to use Backup Exec to write data to tape, how can make Backup Exec from same Veeam Backup Server can visualize the DD Pool and write data to Tape?

Please help and thanks a ton in advance.

Hi Ronald,
Now I see you are up to date :)

Need some details: What is the bottleneck output for the said backup to tape job and how the retention for the source job and target media pool is configured? What is the exact performance with and without compression? How tape drives are connected (directly to VBR or repository)? Awaiting for your reply. Thanks

Bottleneck on source. Backup speed, around 200MB/s.

With or without compression only have slightly different on first backup when change the setting.

Thanks!
Backup speed, around 200MB/s.
Is that the average performance for backup to tape job?
May I know what is the definition of "Latest"?

During the first backup to tape job run it will pick only the backup chain starting from the latest full backup.

Hello Jason,

Please review this post to make sure we are on the same page regarding the synthesized full backup logic – if that does not look like the behavior you are experiencing, please, open a support case for investigation. Thanks.
