Tape Copy V11 - Encryption

Post by futureweb »

Hi,

in your tutorial it states, that encrypted tapes are not supported.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Does it mean software Encrypted, not hardware encrypted?
As I tried to go through the wizard and did't get a warning. Didn't start though, as I don't have a case yet.

Just wanted to get sure, otherwise we wouldn't be able to use the feature at all, as per GDPR we Encrypt all tapes as some are transported offsite. But we use hardware encryption through Veeam.

Thanks
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Tape encryption is supported on both software and hardware layers. However if you want to utilise tapes in copying or restoration workflows, they must be decrypted first:
All tapes to copy and machine backups on them must be decrypted. Encrypted tapes cannot be copied. Encrypted backups are skipped from copying.
You can use this guide to decrypt your tapes:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Neither copying nor restore can be performed before tape decryption.

Ok, so I guess Veeam decrypts it automatically, if it knows the hardware key.

Unless explicitly removed from the catalog, the tapes remain decrypted already.
