Tape overwrite
Hi,
we are currently using LTO tapes for backup and have a media set with one tape per day of the week.
I have configured the Media Pools like this:
Media Set: Do not create, always continue using current media set
Retention: Do not protect data (cyclically overwrite tapes as required)
Each of these tapes contains the restore points for the corresponding day, normally multiple restore points.
We now have the problem that the backup fails, because the tape is full.
I would have expected that old restore points on the tape would be overwritten, but that seems not to happen...
Did I misunderstood the settings or how can we accomplish this behaviour?
Thanks!
Greetings,
ITK

Re: Tape overwrite
Hello ITK,
Can you please clarify if these settings were changed after Media Pool was created (i.e. tape has already been written with different retention value)? Thanks!

Re: Tape overwrite
Hey Dima,
the settings have not been changed on the media pool. The retention value has always been the same.
Previously I erased the tape to check if there was some kind of error, but it is now in the same state.

ITK,
Can you please clarify what is your Veeam B&R version? Any chance you've enabled software tape protection? Thanks!

Re: Tape overwrite
Hello Dima,
I am using Veeam B&R 9.5.
No I am sure that software tape protection is not enabled.
The tape is currently showing that it still has 3,4Gb free, which is not enough for the backup. Could it be that there is some kind of threshold that prevents deletion of older backups?

Re: Tape overwrite
If the settings are set as described, tape media should be erased by retention. Kindly open a support case and share your case ID in this thread. Thank you in advance!
