Not sure whether I follow you on that - if parallel processing is disabled, only one job can be running against selected tape library at a time. Thanks!

We have a different, but also a tape problem in 9.5 update 4. (I think this is a tape problem collection thread. If it's not, please move my post. Thank you.)

We installed update 4 yesterday. The installation was successful, but our two tape drives (HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1760) of our tape library (HPE StoreEver MSL4048) are disabled now. The option "Enabled" in the tape drive properties is enabled, but the drives are shown in Backup & Replication with a red do not enter sign icon.

I restarted the tape server (on which the tape library is physically connected to), but the problem still exists.
I also reenabled the tape drives in Backup & Replication console, but that didn't help either.

Should I try "Enable-VBRTapeDrive"?

jetter-mhornung,

We need more information (Veeam B&R debug logs) to proceed. Kindly, upload the logs to the ftp server provided by our support team and let us know once it's done. Thanks!

Hi. It would also help if you upload Tape service dump as well. To do that, run command line on your tape server as Administrator, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Veeam\Backup Tape and run

Code: Select all

VeeamTapeSvc.exe -dump
This will generate the required dumpinformation.xml file in the same folder.

Dmitry,

what debug logs do you need?
Logs for a certain job oder logs for a certain objects or logs for selected components?

Konstantin,

I've uploaded the dumpinformation.xml to the provided ftp.

We need the logs for Veeam B&R server and Tape server components. To collect these please follow the procedure described in this KB article. Cheers!

According to the logs the problem might be with tape device drivers. Try to open windows device manager and re install the drivers for your tape library (both changer and drives). Will it fix the library discovery issue in Veeam B&R console?

Just noticed exactly the same thing, I have 2 jobs setup to utilise the 2 drives in the library at the same time.

jetter-mhornung,
The next step would be to switch you library to SCSI commands. Please try to check this box in the library properties and let us know how it goes.

Hello Dmitry,

I've switched to "Use native SCSI commands instead of Windows driver".

Is there any further action (like restarting the tape library and/or the tape server) necessary?
I'm asking because the status of the tape drives hasn't changed, they are still disabled.

Edit: The drives are enabled now! Needed probably just a little bit to come back on duty :o I'll test/retry the recently failed backup to tape job.

jetter-mhornung,
Great! Thank you for configuration and glad to know that we found the solution.

Nathan,
Thanks! Please try the same workaround and let us know how it goes (meanwhile support team should collect your debug logs as we still need this information for our QC department)?

I've updated the support case with new logs for investigation purpose.

Would you also answer my questions in the support case about the configuration change please?

I was not having a problem with drives being offline. My problem is Veeam not using two drives concurrently, there is still a job running so I will have to wait before trying anything.

I am glad to hear that solution is working fine and thank you for the additional logs. I'll leave further investigation and log analysys to our support team (but, as promised, we will review the issue with RnD team).

Nathan,
Noted, but then is completely different issue. Please work with our support team and let us know how it goes! Cheers!
