Tape Reservations for NetApp (CDOT) NDMP backups

Post by jettman96 »

We are trying to configure our new NetApp (running CDOT) and Veeam 10 to use the NDMP to tape functionality. NetApp recommends configuring Tape reservations is this required for Veeam? Are they the same as the Media Pools?

Please reference this documentation: https://docs.netapp.com/ontap-9/index.j ... 24805.html

Thanks,
Nik

Hello,
as I read the previous section of your link, it looks like a different scenario
Tape devices are connected to the cluster through a Fibre Channel (FC) switch and not directly attached
That is not the case with Veeam. With Veeam the traffic goes from the Netapp to the Veeam tape server (via ethernet. not fibre channel) and then to the tape device.

Best regards,
Hannes

Just to clarify... effectively you're saying that when using NDMP via Veeam, we do not have the ability to take advantage of our FibreChannel connections. We would love to be able to do that.

Thanks,
Nik

Correct. The advantage in our implementation is, that it works with every storage that supports NDMP. We are aware of the disadvantage you mention, but rate the advantages higher.
