RHEL V6 Backup & Progress DB Questions

Veeam Logoby TrevorBell » Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:28 am

Hi Folks,

I`m out of my comfort zone with Linux and have a question to ask the forum.

I`m currently at a new business where there the main Application is Red Hat Linux 6 running a Progress Database v10.1

Whilst at the moment Vsphere Replication is making a copy of the VM to a DR site I wish to swap this over to Veeam ( of course ! :D )

I do not need to make a consistent copy ( although it would be nice )

I just need to make a copy of the VM so we could follow existing process of copying a copy of the DB to the Replicated VM.

My real question is around these points

1. Vsphere Replicator I assume is just making a copy calling the API - so in theory swapping to Veeam will be exactly the same - making a non consistent version.

2. Is there are value in adding the Linux backup agent to the RHEL v6 server ?

3. Anyone currently backing up Progress Databases with Veeam possibly using freeze and thaw scripts ? This is a 24/7 business so not entirely sure if this is the way forward but would be interested to hear anyone out there :)

Many Thanks

You can backup the server using Veeam Backup & Replication. No need to install the agent.

In regards to backing it up you'll need to use those freeze & thaw scripts indeed based on their native tools (https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.4/static/backup.html).

Hi Niels,

Thanks for the feedback.

Found this article with the scripts http://knowledgebase.progress.com/artic ... earch&pn=1

Was hoping there was a way to do a a snapshot or backup without using the freeze and thaw commands to make a non consistent backup, but I can work on a test server with the scripts above to test.

Many Thanks

If you just use a plain vmware snapshot the db won't be consistent so it is advised to use the scripts :-)
