Agent 4.0.1.2169 using 10001, not 10005 for license server
I am trying to install an agent on a remote workstation. My firewalls all have the ports open according to:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
This indicates port 10005 for license server communication. When I try to connect the agent to the repository, the port defaults to 10001. It won't connect, and there is nothing listening on 10001 on my server (version 10). The server is listening on 10005, as the documentation suggests.
I tried changing the port on the agent, and it still does not connect to the server. I looked in the logs, and even though I changed the agent to point to 10005, it still uses 10001:
[08.11.2020 10:28:33] <13> Info Networking error: [Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.. An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine ipobscured:10001]
I have tried opening 10001 on the server, but nothing is listening to it on version VBR 10.

Hello nchand,
Is that a standalone agent or managed by Veeam B&R? In case of standalone deployment you need to open the ports listed in this chart. Cheers!

Re: Agent 4.0.1.2169 using 10001, not 10005 for license server
I tried the standalone agent. I opened 10001, but the server does not respond to that port, even in a telnet session. The server responds to 10005.
I am not entirely sure, however, the difference between the two options - standalone vs managed by VBR. My wish is to connect my remote agent to my VBR server, and be able to backup itself to the same SMB repository used by my server VBR for internal backups. I want to be able to see the agent's backup status in VBR, and manage it's backups and such. So, I guess I am desiring the managed mode? If so, is there a different installation protocol for this, where I do not install the client manually on the remote host?

Looks like i needed to open 10001 on the WIndows firewall on my server, I guess the Veeam B&R install did not open that one automatically.
So, now I can connect my agent to the server. And, it looks like it shows up in VB&R. So i guess, what is the difference between this mode and managed mode?

Managed agents are fully controlled by Veeam B&R server, while standalone mode offers only backup to the repository (the management must be performed manually). Due to the difference in operations managed agents require slightly different ports. Cheers!

Got it, sounds great. I will try the managed mode today.
I see an option in managed mode: "run server on this side". Does this mean the data would be "pulled" by the server from the client, rather than "pushed" to the server from the agent? If that is true, would that mean better performance if my server's Internet download speed is faster than it's upload speed?

You can pretty much ignore this setting... it's about which side establishes a connection (only important in presence of NAT), but makes zero difference otherwise.

Ah OK. Is there any way to switch direction of the file being transferred? Have it pulled from the agent by the server instead of pushed by the agent to the server? Our ISP gives us a much slower upload speed to the server than the download speed. Just curious id there were any way to take advantage of the download bandwidth.

Hello nchand,
No, unfortunately, there is no way to do that from the agent side since agent always uploads data to the repository. Cheers!
