Avast antivirus does not like veeam endpoint backup

Post by ITP-Stan »

Just a heads up to people using Avast Antvirus.
Avast would block a file during install of Veeam Endpoint and this would cause the installer to hang. Restoring the file from the vault does not work. I had to disable Avast, repair of Veeam Endpoint did not work either, I had to uninstall and reinstall while avast was disabled.

After my next reboot, the endpoint tray icon would say the service is not available, it was gone and could not be started. I had to add the Veeam folder (under program files) as an exception in Avast, then again disable Avast and reinstall Veeam Endpoint Backup.

Now everything is running fine, with the exception set for the veeam folder.

Hello Stan,
Thank you for the heads up! We've already submitted a case with AVAST team, hopefully we will get Endpoint whitelisted soon (AVAST antivirus DB update may require). Thank you.

I would just like to update that the Avast issue is not an isolated incident with this user, we had the same problem with AVAST Endpoint Protection blocking both the installation and execution of Veeam Endpoint Backup.

Also of amusing note; the similarity in the product's names.

Caleb,
We are working on this, meanwhile please add Endpoint folder to exclusion list, as Stan advised. Thank you

Marco,
Thank you for the screenshot, can I use while working with Avast team on false detection? In addition, if you can collect and share the Avast detection log with me – that would be awesome.

Do you start installation file with run as administrator option?

jurabike,

There is indeed a notification that installed antivirus may affect your VEB installation but that’s just a warning (it should not block VEB setup). Check your account privileges like Vitaliy said and whitelist VEB setup in Avast console just in case.

For what it's worth, I did not have any more issues with avast blocking Veeam Endpoint since the 1st BETA. With the newer versions it all went fine.

Thanks for the heads up. We do submit a white listing request as a part of every release (minor or major), good to know that it helps.

Try to stop all Avast services, install VEB and then re-enable your antivirus. Should help.

Ok, please consult with your administrator who deployed Avast. Cannot comment on how to temporary stop its service.

jurabike,

You may want to use Avast control panel - just disable 'All Shields' in it's UI and try to start setup again.

Hello,

Avast is not possible stop...There are theses processes which say ACESS IS DENIED when trying to stop them avastsvc.exe / avastui.exe /avastbox.exe
I checked this with Avast support (how to stop these services),they said me,that this is issue of Veeam. And they will not give any hint how to stop these services.

Shame,i wanted to use Veeam in our production on 60 coputers...but Avast doesnt let it :(

Hi,

Did you follow the instructions in this KB for whitelisting: https://www.veeam.com/kb2034 and tried to install it afterwards? Also, if not yet done, make sure you indeed disable the shields as Dima said

Thanks

Mike

We cant some how interfere with Avast services (our software is not even installed  ). Likely they have its own driver which prevents you from stopping their services.

Try to boot your computer in Safe mode and run VEB installation.
