Backing up only folders with given name (and subfolders)

Post by Moebius »

Hello,
in a file level backup, is it possible to back up only folders with a certain name and their subfolders based on an include mask?
In the "Advanced" dialog it refers to "File Filters" only; folders are not mentioned.

Hello Lucio,

It's currently not possible to add file path with by name mask, instead you can select or add specific file paths in the UI. Can you please share more information of your backup scenario to understand the case better? Thank you!

Hi Dima, sure. I have a customer that has several hundreds of projects on his server. Each project consists of many folders, only one of which contains the source files that could be used to rebuild the whole project.
The source files folder has a fixed name.
To protect all projects I need to back up only those folders. The entire disk is 18TB and the destination repository does not have enough capacity. A backup comprising only the source files folders would easily fit into the destination repository.
Selecting those folders one by one in the UI is not possible, as there are several hundreds of them, and new projects are created daily.

Can anybody help with a solution to this problem? Other than selecting all 500+ folders manually and repeating every day?

It sure looks odd to me that there is the possibility of including/excluding files but not folders.

Lucio,

Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately there is still no option to include or exclude paths with wildcards in names, but I'll add you vote to this feature request. As for dynamic scope selection you can add the root folder or even volume to get the child objects updated dynamically as they are created or deleted. Hope it helps!

Dima,
is there a way to mark specific folders for backup via command line, instead of doing it in the UI?
This way I could make a list of all the folders that need to be backed up and include all of them in the backup job. It would also be possible to schedule this process in order to include the newly created folders that need to be backed up.

Yup, you can do that via configuration import/export. The best way would be - configure the job the way you and it to work, export the configuration, adjust the source list and then import the xml backup. Please note that you may need to add username and password to the repo as we do not export this settings from VAW configuration. Here is the command overview and the xml backup scope description.
