Hi All,
First off let me say I am a scientific instrument administrator that managers their computers as well; I’m pretty good with computers having took numerous CS classes but my degree is in chemistry. We are a 1000+ person site and have a separate IT department that I am working with to help rectify this issue however. We recently obtained an Oracle 12.1 database running on a physical machine with Windows Server 2012 R2. It's getting an image level backup, there is Veeam Agent installed 2.2 on the server and company-wide Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 is utilized. During the daily backup process the Oracle server gets restarted during the process. If any analyses are running on the instrument that uses the database they get terminated during the brief period the database goes down. The person I’ve been communicating with in IT suggested excluding the database from the backup but that’s the most important data being backed up! Based on my searching of the forums and the Veeam website it appears that the database should be able to be backed online up via VSS so I believe the backup is just not configured properly. Is this correct and if so does anyone know what configuration settings need to be changed to perform the backup without restarting the database?

Re: Backup Causes Oracle DB to Restart
Hello,
and welcome to the forums.
Is it possible that the database is running in NO-ARCHIVELOG mode?
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Backup Causes Oracle DB to Restart
Hi Hannes,
Thank you. Good catch, I reconfigured the database to be in ARCHIVELOG mode tonight. I anxiously await tomorrow's backup to see if this fixes it.
Thanks,
Jesse
