[MERGED]backup error code 21

Post by PeterSchwatz » Nov 24, 2015 2:26 pm

I have a physical Windows Server 2012R2 with Veeam B&R v8 installed.
I installed Veeam Enpoint Backup on the same server to backup the system patition.
The backup (Volume level backup) finished with an error:error:

Code: Select all

Error: The device is not ready. Error code: 21 Failed to read data from the file [\\?\Volume{2da8b3c6-31eb-49a6-9127-3d3150f02664}]. Failed to upload disk. Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}. Exception from server: The device is not ready. Error code: 21 Failed to read data from the file [\\?\Volume{2ad8b3c8-31eb-49a6-9127-5d3140f02964}]. Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [0]. Failed to download disk.
How can I resolve the problem?

Hello Peter,

As I see, the last case from the thread was closed because customer was having a write-protected partition. Can you clarify your configuration please? In addition, it might be a good idea to open a support case since then we can investigate your logs. Thank you

I my case the hidden recovery partition (HP ProLiant Gen9) was the reason for the error.
When I disable the recovery Partition the backup Job runs without an error.
Why can't I backup the recovery partition?

Peter,

Can you elaborate how this partition is allocated? Is it mounted or hidden partition? Thanks

I see one Disk with 3 partitions in the windows disk Management.
partition 1: Recovery partition (dispalyed in Veeam EB as hidden)
partition 2: EFI system partition (displayed in Veeam EB as hidden)
partition 3; system (C:\)

Peter,

Thanks for the details! Can you run a test: perform a file level backup of this recovery partition only?

Thanks, I believe you got two options now. First is to use the volume level backup with this volume unchecked. Second it to disable the read-only mode for this vendor’s partition like described in this article, be advised that some vendors may strictly limit the disk repartitioning in their devices and it may affect your warranty.

[MERGED] Error on Backup with latest Version

Post by Brudertac » Apr 07, 2016 1:07 pm

Hello @all,

i've installed the latest Version 1.5.0.306 on a virtualized Windows 10 Machine. (Hyper-V)
When i Backup the complete Computer i get the following Error:

Code: Select all

07.04.2016 14:34:38 :: \\?\Volume{f4c70274-0000-0000-0000-b0a30c000000} (disk 0) (450,0 MB) 0,0 KB read at 0 KB/s
07.04.2016 14:34:45 :: Error: Das Gerät ist nicht bereit. Error code: 21 Failed to read data from the file [\\?\Volume{f4c70274-0000-0000-0000-b0a30c000000}]. Failed to upload disk. Agent failed to process method {DataTransfer.SyncDisk}. Exception from server: Das Gerät ist nicht bereit. Error code: 21 Failed to read data from the file [\\?\Volume{f4c70274-0000-0000-0000-b0a30c000000}]. Unable to retrieve next block transmission command. Number of already processed blocks: [34391]. Failed to download disk.
It looks like this is a Windows 10 Recovery Partition. Is this a known Problem or is there a way to solve this?

Many thanks and best regards
Danny

Danny,

Please open a support case from VEB Control Panel > Support. We need to check the application logs first.

Nelson,

Can you elaborate what volume generates this error? Have you opened a support case? Thanks.

Dima,

This Harddrive is the only connected in Laptop, that have the following partitions/volumes listed with Diskpart:

DISKPART> list vol

Volume No. Ltr Rótulo Fs Tipo Tamanho Status Informaçõ
es
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 D DVD-ROM 0 B Nenhuma m
Volume 1 C OS NTFS Partição 921 GB Íntegro Iniciali
Volume 2 ESP FAT32 Partição 500 MB Íntegro Sistema
Volume 3 RAW Partição 750 MB Íntegro Oculto
Volume 4 RAW Partição 8 GB Íntegro Oculto

I haven't noticed that I had 2 RAW volumes listed, because diskmgmt.msc showed the volumes as Healthy. Can be this the cause of issue?

I will try to repair those volumes, but how can I open a new support case if needed?

Regards,

Nelson M.
