Nightly backups, 14-day cycle, on a home office network across to a WD MyCloud are failing. They've worked fine for about a year, but failed this week with the error message saying "media is write protected," even though it isn't

Thanks for the case number.
Please keep working with our support. Logs needs to be analyze. I also cannot find similar cases in the forum.
Are you using SMB Shares as backup target?
If you can write to the Backup SMB share on your WD My Cloud with the Windows Explorer, then it also should work with Veeam Agent. Also check the Logs on the WD NAS.
