Backup sometimes fails with error 0x80042306 but retry always succeeds

Hi, I'm using a file-level backup of a OS drive and secondary 2TB storage disk with folder exclusions (disk is encrypted with bitlocker). I'm backing up to a 2TB USB drive.

Most of the days, the backup is running fine but sometimes the first attempt fails with error 0x80042306. This is always followed by a retry and the backup job always completes successfully after 1st retry.

07/01/2020 01:30:55 :: Creating VSS snapshot Error: Failed to create snapshot: Backup job failed. Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data. VSS asynchronous operation is not completed. Operation: [Shadow copies commit]. Code: [0x80042306].


I have no clue why the first backup sometimes fails.. All shadow copy writers reports no issues and Shadow storage for C drive on C is set to UNBOUND.

Can you please clarify how large is the source data set? Are you excluding some folders / files for processing? Thanks!

Hello,

VBK file is 788GB, separate VIB file is 20GB. I'm using file-level backup to backup an SSD drive (C:) and to backup my DATA drive. The data drive is encrypted with bitlocker but ofcourse unlocked when the backup is running. I am excluding 1 big folder from the DATA drive in the backup job.
