destination disc space management

Hello,

Planing to backup a solo computer to a USB disc. How do you manage disc space on the backup destination?
- is there an option to let the soft manage it and automaticaly adjust retention?
- If it must be managed mannually, how do I make some space without loosing the ability to restore, to break the chain of versions?

are there guidelines best practices?
