Exclude folder for application backup

Post by toreml »

Hi.

I'm migrating to Veeam from another backup software - and there I can exclude the database and log folders on mssql server from the file backup - and take backup of the database with the database agent.
The reason is because I don't want to take backup of the database files when I have a online backup of the databases.

If I use a backup agent on a sql server - can I then i Veeam also exclude the database and log folders - and still have the application aware backup of the databases?
This will save me a lot of space on the storage.

Hi Tore,

What kind of backup are you planning to do? Full image, volume-based, files and folders?

Thanks!

Hi Vitaliy!

As far as I could find I have to do a file-level-backup in order to exclude given folders - with application aware.
Or can I do this on Full or volume-based

The exclude\include mask is available only for the file-level type of job. Thanks!

So will the application run OK - and enable SQL database restore?

Tore,

Yes, you should be able to restore the consistent application from the backup with AAP enabled.

If I got it right, you back up the database and log files by another tool before the Veeam backup, right?
In case of disaster, you will restore the MySQL machine and import database, logs from the online storage, correct?

Thanks!

No - I don't use another tool.
I will use Veeam for backup of both the files and SQL databases.
I would like to not include the database and logfiles for the databases backuped as application aware.
This would save me alot of space on the backup storage.

So I guess that the question is - will the application aware process connect to SQL server application and get the database data direct without reading it from the disk.
This must be something like if you have sql servers with independent disks.

Tore,

The backup size will not change drastically because of application-aware enabled or not.
The application-aware processing guarantees that the backup will be transactionally consistent.

Maybe you want to exclude some SQL databases from the application-aware image processing? Take a look at the KB2110. Thanks!
