Feature Request - restore to smaller disk

machines from 'back then' installed system volumes (500gb+) to a lot smaller systems (like 128g ssds)

It’s important to understand that used space can’t be properly resized if it contains the actual data blocks or if there are several unmovable blocks.

I might be missing something but if you are talking about resize during bare metal recovery – its available since 1.1 version. You may need to recreate the recovery media after upgrade in case you are using the previously created one. Check the Help Center article for more details: Resize Restored Volumes

Using VEB 1.5, backed up full drive 1TB HD (Recovery Q:, System_Drv, Windows7_OS C:) to a network share. There's only 160GB total on all 3 partitions. HD went bad, can we expect to restore to a new 480GB SSD? If so, what procedure might work?
When I try to restore, it lets me restore Recovery Q: and/or System_Drv, but when I try restore C: it says "volume is larger than specified destination. Shrink volume to fit destination?" OK, then "Analyzing volume's content..", then it shows:

Failed to get VolumeResizeProvider for volume
de561d51-5a5e-19e6-979b-cc52af4bf2x0
Failed to start VDS service.
COM error: Code: 0x80080005

Is this essentially telling us we must restore back to at least 1TB drive, or is there some way we can restore to smaller drive (that is large enough to hold all the restored files)?
Thanks

Hi ftcnet,

Unfortunately, I can’t provide any information regarding the error you got. Can you please open a case and supply support team with the recovery log for troubleshooting analysis? Thanks.

Went to customer site, booted from Recovery Media, and was able to select Restore and Resize to smaller partition, but after several minutes it shows "The selected volume cannot be resized. Please specify a different destination disk." I don't see any option to create or capture logs from the Bare Metal Recovery.

You can open a support case from any live VEB machine and recovery logs are automatically saved in the backup repository. What was the original volume and the desired size?

[MERGED] Disk Mapping Issue - Restoring from larger drive

Veeam Logoby jcpro » Sun Oct 30, 2016 5:18 am

I am trying to restore the backup of my system volume from a 256GB SSD, which recently failed, to a 250GB SSD but when I get to the Disk Mapping option it tells me:

Code: Select all
This volume is larger than the specified destination.
Shrink the volume to fit the destination?

I click okay and then it spits out:

Code: Select all
Failed to set disk layout, disk '\\.\PhysicalDrive4'.
Failed to set drive layout.
Win32 error: The parameter is incorrect
Code: 87

I could only create recovery media from a Windows 10 system that I have available here but the backup itself is for a Windows 7 system. Would this error be anything to do with the version of the OS where I created the Veeam Endpoint Recovery media or is it really the fact that Veeam cannot shrink the backup image size by a measly 6GB? I would really like to use hardware that I've already previously purchased for this instead of needing to buy a brand new 256GB drive.

Thanks

6 GB in disk size should not be a problem if using VEB 1.1 or newer.
I would suggest to contact Veeam support team. Thanks!

Hi!

I backed up my mobo-raid last night with veb (along with the whole Computer).
Today I removed the raid, installed a decent raid card and re-created the raid with same raid level and disks.

Now I'm trying to restore the volume, but I get an error message "Insufficient disk size".

The volume is 2.72TB, and there's barely 1TB data.

Yes I know I could use "restore files" option, but restoring the whole volume would be handier, and probably faster.

I havent. Should feature requests be posted to support team via ticket?

For a feature request you don`t need a support case number.
Could you specify the request, please? Because restore to smaller disk is already available.
Thanks!
