Feature Request - restore to smaller disk

Veeam Logoby ssnow » Mon Dec 08, 2014 8:57 pm

I have a backup with two drives

A 240gb ssd for the server, and a 1TB drive to store wsus data and veeam restore data. The 1TB drive is barely used.

When i try to restore the server with the appliance, It just refuse to map the 1TB disk unless i have a equivalent or bigger disk to restore to.

We should be able to have some form of sliders in the disk management to pick the disk size, and we should see how much data is used on each volume so it make easier to move the sliders.

Makes sense. I actually thought we had this feature available already, but apparently it was postponed for v2.

Feature Request Resize Partition for Restore

Veeam Logoby lollolcctr » Mon Dec 15, 2014 9:12 am

First of all, this is already a great product, easy to use and the features are already working very well in the BETA!
But i'm missing a feature to resize the target size of a partition for (Baremetal-)Restore.

Example: i backed up my systempartition (250GB / 60GB used), i want to restore on another machine with an 80GB harddisk.
This is not possible but would be very handy when resoring to other hardware.

Thanks alot for the nice work!

Can I also add my name to the request. I'm currnetly looking to move to an ssd as they are now a lot cheaper than they uesd to be. I've a 500Gb disk but only using 65Gb of it so moving to a 120gb ssd should be easy.
But it would be a real plus point if this product could restore actual data instead of full disk size partiton. Downsizing is good :o)

Yes, I have made the same feature request internally when migrating data from my old desktop to the new one :)

Before I grab someone's laptop to replace the disk for an ssd, is this feature available in the current version?

Request to restore to a smaller disc size!

I wanted to restore to a new solid state drive from my extremely slow 5400rpm 1tb drive. There is only 100gb of space used on the 1tb drive and the backup size is only 92gb.

Please make an option to accommodate this. I know you'll make even more people happy with your current incredible product!

Hi Will,
This feature will be available soon - do not forget to enable ‘Automatically check and notify me on available updates’ option in the Endpoint's Control Panel to get a notification regarding upcoming update. Cheers!

Hi guys,

I have a little discussion this afternoon with Dmitry, he said that currently there's no ETA for this feature but it will be included first in the next release of Veeam Endpoint.
So I find a quick workaround on a Windows 8.1 computer (I think it works on every version of Windows since the shrink option is included in the disk management console) to shrink a huge amount of free space from my large partition to be able to restore it on a smaller drive, here the steps:
- First you need to turn off hibernation on the computer, run a prompt command as administrator, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off then press Enter.
- Then disable the pagefile, select no paging file and reboot.
- After the reboot turn off system protection for the C:\ drive and reboot again.
- Go to the disk management console and you'll be able to shrink a huge amount of free space on the drive (much more than if you don't follow the 3 first steps).
- After the shrink, turn on system protection and enable the pagefile again.
- Launch a new standalone full backup... and you know the next steps.

Hope this helps.

Adrien,
That’s a good workaround indeed, but that helps only is you have the OS running. Imagine you are replacing the corrupted HDD with SSD, thus cant boot the windows.

P.S. There is a new blog post with some 1.1 update spoilers – worth checking

[MERGED] Feature Request: Restore NTFS to smaller volumes

Veeam Logoby b.stromberg » Mon Jul 27, 2015 2:14 pm

A very common case for us, is the backup/restore 'movement' of machines from 'back then' installed system volumes (500gb+) to a lot smaller systems (like 128g ssds). It would be extremely helpful to us, if the restore of 60gb data would use 60g of data and would not require the x-7tb disk that was one-upon-a-time(tm) used to install the 60g system.
Yes, I know this may be a tricky thing, yes, I know the v1 engine will maybe never be able to resize ntfs, but since there is an API to resize ntfs I hope there may be a solution ...
