How to backup 10TB of files

Post by Karol »

Hello everyone,

We have old Dell PowerEdge R710 10TB as AD/file serwer and we plan to move it on new serwer (with 4x HDD in RAID 10). What dou you suggest guys? What new server should have? 1xRJ45 connected to NAS like Synology/QNAP/WD or thunderbold? Maybe something better solution is there?

Sincerely
Karol

Hello,
and welcome to the forums.

It depends on how much restore speed you need. Well, and how much backup speed of course :-)

If that one server is your only server, then a NAS like the mentioned ones is an option. Going to a disk directly with USB or Thunderbolt would also work.

Best regards,
Hannes

For a standalone server, I'd always use internal storage (DAS). Even with a good RAID controller it's cheaper than a NAS, faster and better to handle.

well, it's hard to manage the 3-2-1 rule with internal disks

@HannesK I was referring to the basic AD/file server (DAS or NAS doesn't make a difference in terms of production storage vs backup, but DAS should provide a better efficiency).

Of course, for backup you use an external NAS or at least external HDDs with rotation. For the 3rd copy, you can use cloud storage or tape with off-site storage.
