How to open VEB VBK files

Veeam Logoby WingDog » Wed May 18, 2016 4:33 am

Hello.
Tried to open VBK file with VeeamBackupExtractor (taked from VBR 9 RTM) but no luck - error "the system cannot find the path specified".
my VBK is corrupted or something else?
thanks!

Hi,

Did that error show up when you browsed and selected the .vbk file?

VBR 9 RTM

It’s time to upgrade, isn’t it
there were russian symbols in file path.

We'll double check it with QA - thanks for the heads up!

I'm a little confused.
after extraction I've got an "5EDB1CB1" file - this is full file name w/o extension.
it's neither vhd nor vhdx.
what is this?

Kirill,

You mean, after the backup was extracted you got a file without any extension?

P.S. If you want to ‘covert’ the backup of the vmdk/vhd(x) – you can use the Export as virtual disk type of restore in VBR. Should be available even in VBR FREE edition.

Got it - thanks. Need some time to check, as I believe we never integrated extractor with VEB backups.

Dima, extract does support VEB backups (as you can see from the above screenshot), but the question to OP is what did you expect to see in VEB backup if not a raw image file and related metadata? Why did you expect to see VHD/VHDX when it is a physical server backup? Now, you can convert that raw image file into virtual disk files, but it requires additional conversion logic that understands volumes, partitions and virtual disk format. And this logic is available in B&R only.

Hello, Gostev.
there is no any glue with my expectations. All I need is open VBK file and get data.
VEB has the FLR component, so I thought it can work as standalone solution.
apparently not

You can just extract data from within the Veeam Endpoint Backup program. Or is this not what you want to do?

I can't install any software there and there is no VEB at this server.
