Incremental every 15 minutes?

Veeam Logoby AlexLeadingEdge » Mon Aug 07, 2017 3:24 am

Is it possible to get Veeam Agent 2.0.0.700 to do an incremental backup every 15 minutes? We have a machine that holds very important data that changes often and so we need a way to make sure that if it dies we don't lose more than a few minutes worth of data.

I think you can use Windows Task Sheduler to this.

Thanks, I wasn't 100% sure. I found this a few minutes ago:

Creating Incremental Backups

To perform an incremental backup, use a command with the following syntax:

"C:\Program Files\Veeam\Endpoint Backup\Veeam.EndPoint.Manager.exe" /backup

Creating Standalone Full Backups

To create a standalone full backup, use a command with the following syntax:

"C:\Program Files\Veeam\Endpoint Backup\Veeam.EndPoint.Manager.exe" /standalone

Works great, the only problem is that the backup takes a few seconds to complete (not much to do) but the merge takes anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes. This basically means that Veeam is running constantly. I'm going to play around with the settings to see if smaller incrementals means shorter merge times (because my current oldest incrementals are dailies, not every 15 minutes)

I have deleted all the backups and set it to backup every 15 minutes by Task Scheduler, the first one took a while as it was a Full, but I've set Veeam to keep the backups for 7 days so I expect 672 backups before the Full. I then will also set it so that it does an Active Full on Sunday. Not sure if this will go as I plan, but should be interesting!

The incrementals are all ~500MB, so that would equate to 336GB of disk space needed. I've changed the number of days to 3, and set it to create an Active Full each day. Will see how it goes.

Sounds like a good plan, thanks for sharing. Just to let you know – server edition has periodic backup options built-in to the UI. Worth checking in trial license

I agree with Dima, since this machine holds sensitive data, it might make sense to purchase the server edition. Risk vs cost = convenience;)

Unfortunately that isn't a possibility, the price of the Agent for the Server edition isn't expected to be cost effective (we are still waiting for Veeam Sales to contact us with pricing for the Agent, they seem to be dragging their feet!).

Veeam Sales just called, definitely not cost effective. How do I put in a feature request that the Workstation Edition be able to run in "Continuous Mode"? We have backup and print "servers" that are actually just Windows 10 machines, where this would be handy.

What about using ReFS and the fast cloning API? This configuration would boost the merge process a lot.

What do have that changes every 15 mins? I'm assuming some sort of sql transactional log? Just curious.

Alex,

Noted your request. I am also interested what type of data you want to protect so frequently (when talking about workstations), so thank you in advance for your response.

Point of Sales (POS) machines. As they are DOS based they hold a local database and update the database on stock changes and sales at the end of the day.
