Post by mbaumli »

I am getting an installation error on clicking "An error has occurred: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

There is another more detailed screen which gives additional information, but the error is rather lengthy

But the log shows this:
Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Veeam Endpoint Backup BETA. Product Version: 8.0.0.1822. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Veeam Software AG. Installation success or error status: 0.

I would log a support case, but this is a "free" beta product and assumed that there was no support for this product. If this is wrong, please let me know.

Hello Michael,
You are welcome to submit a support case. I am tracking the similar issues in this thread, kindly, please take a look at this post. In addition, to the described procedure please check that SYSTEM account has full access permissions to systemprofile folder (C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile).

Hello Dmitry,

I recently tried to install Veeam Endpoint Backup on a HP MicroServer ProLiant Gen8 running Windows Server 2012 Essentials and I think I am having a similar problem with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB installation/configuration.

Since the problem is on a server, may I kindly ask the support team to review the logs before I go ahead and attempt to perform the instructions you have prepared for anyone who faced installation issues.

I have collected and shared all relevant logs and I am sending you the link via PM.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Massimiliano,
Can I ask you to do the following:

- Download and install Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Management Studio Express
- Check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup for the following values: SqlInstancePipeName and SqlLogin / SqlPassword
- Try to open Endpoint database via Management Studio with SqlInstancePipeName as a server name, SqlLogin / SqlPassword as login and password using SQL authentication.
- Check Under Security > Logins what accounts are listed

Send me a screenshot of exising accounts via this post or PM. Thank you.

Management Studio seems not to be able to connect to LocalDB from within this HP MicroServer ProLiant Gen8 running Windows Server 2012 Essentials. The same procedure works from within another server.

Massimiliano,

Anything from TrendMicro installed on your machine? Could you shut it down and then reinstall the product – its #1 troubleshooting step from the guide above :wink:

Hi Dmitry,

thank you for reply.

I confirm Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Services is installed on this machine. I have to say that I have successfully installed Veeam Endpoint Backup on a number of Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 64-bit endpoints and they are all running Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Services.

As part of #1 troubleshooting step from the guide above, I have just unloaded the Worry-Free Business Security Agent using the “Security Agent Uninstall Tool” (a tool Trend Micro provides to manually unload and/or uninstall their Agent).

I have not yet tried to reinstall Veeam Endpoint Backup because Management Studio is not able to connect to the LocalDB instance even after unloading the Worry-Free Business Security Agent, so I doubt Veeam Endpoint Backup will install successfully if the product cannot connect to the LocalDB instance.

The LocalDB instance itself seems good:

==================================================

Unfortunately I am not a SQL guy and I am having a hard time in the attempt to detect what's wrong with the unsuccessful connection to the LocalDB instance.

Dmitry,

as part of trying to connect SSMS 2008 to the LocalDB instance using named pipes, I managed to get the address of the Veeam Endpoint Backup LocalDB instance by running the following commands:

==================================================
1. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\SqlLocalDB.exe" start VeeamEndPoint
2. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\SqlLocalDB.exe" info VeeamEndPoint
==================================================
Please find below the results:

==================================================
C:\Windows\system32>"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\SqlLocalDB.exe" info VeeamEndPoint
Name: VeeamEndPoint
Version: 11.0.2100.60
Shared name:
Owner: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Auto-create: No
State: Running
Last start time: 18/02/2015 14.15.03
Instance pipe name: np:\\.\pipe\LOCALDB#5055F163\tsql\query
==================================================

The above command returns “np:\\.\pipe\LOCALDB#5055F163\tsql\query” as the instance pipe name, while HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup returns “np:\\.\pipe\LOCALDB#8C5F36B7\tsql\query”.
When I try to open the Endpoint database via Management Studio using the instance pipe name returned in the "SqlLocalDB.exe info VeeamEndPoint" command above I do get a “Login failed” error:

==================================================
Image
==================================================

Based on the results, Case B of the troubleshooting steps from the guide above (delete and re create the instance) should be the way to go.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you again for your support.

Massimiliano

EDIT: I just realized the portion of the Instance pipe name after LOCALDB# will change each time the instance of LocalDB is started.

Massimiliano,
I just realized the portion of the Instance pipe name after LOCALDB# will change each time the instance of LocalDB is started.
My bad, I should have mentioned that every time Endpoint service is restated SQL access credentials and pipe name are changed, but Its reflected in the registry. I’ve noticed that TrendMicro could affect the Endpoint setup and even corrupt the Endpoint database instance but it happens very sporadically.

Hello Dmitry,

sorry for the delay, I was out of the office for the last couple of days for a training.

I received your PM and performed the following step-by-step instructions:

==================================================
- Uninstalled Endpoint
- Rebooted the machine
- Disabled Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Services
- Added to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup key Name = Recreatedatabase Type = DWORD Value = 1 via regedit.exe
- Started Endpoint setup again
==================================================
I noticed that the pipe name is changed in the registry, however the installation program still fails to start the service ‘Veeam Endpoint Backup service’:

Massimiliano,
Thanks - forwarded your logs to QA team. By the way, any chance that the affected machine is in domain with some password GPO (or maybe local policy)?

Dmitry,

sorry for the delay.

Indeed, the affected machine I am trying to install Veeam Endpoint Backup on is running Windows Server 2012 Essentials. It is the domain controller at the root of the forest and domain.

The affected machine is acting as a file server (we have not installed other applications) and all GPOs come out of the box with Windows Server 2012 Essentials without any customizations/additional GPOs.

Is there any particular Group Policy setting I should also look into ?

Thanks and Regards,

Massimiliano

Hi Massimiliano,
Thanks for the update! In several cases we have confirmed the generated SQL password to be the root of the issue (as the password does not meet some default GPO requirements). It will be corrected in GA, meanwhile please check the hotfix and solution I've sent you and let me know it helps. Thank you.

Hello Dmitry,

thank you for your quick reply.

I am attempting to reply via PM to the message containing the hotfix and solution you sent me via PM as well, however my replies get stacked up in the Outbox folder of my User Control Panel. I don’t know whether you’re receiving them.

The х64 bit folder containing the .dll pack also contains a subfolder named “х64” (there also is a subfolder named “х86”). The “х64” subfolder contains two files: “NtfsLib.dll” and “VeeamAgent.exe”. Do I have to grab and copy them as well ?

Thanks and Regards,

Massimiliano

The Veeam RC version that I installed is 1.0.0.1921

Here is a screenshot of the installation error

https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=DEC48D57 ... 128696&v=3

If I run the commands below it looks like the SQL Local DB is not being created in the installation process.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\SqlLocalDB.exe" start VeeamEndPoint
The specified LocalDB instance does not exist.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Tools\Binn\SqlLocalDB.exe" info VeeamEndPoint
Printing of LocalDB instance "VeeamEndPoint" information failed because of the following error:
LocalDB instance "VeeamEndPoint" doesn't exist!

Shane,
Thank you! For further troubleshooting could you please collect the following information and share via any available cloud storage with me (send me a download link via PM):

- The full setup logs from C:\ProgramData\Veeam
- Windows Event logs from windows event viewer (Custom View > Administrative events)
- LocalDB error log from %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances\VeeamEndPoint\ (it should look like error.log, error1.log, error2.log etc)
