IS it possible to do a full back up on a smaller SSD?

Post by Metalalchemist »

SO I have been using veeam for a couple of years now, for my gaming computer I use volume level back as I don't want all of games being backed up since its so much space. Plus I have 2 NVME drives, and an SSD totaling 6TB for the system. My back SSD is only 2TB, if I did full back up would it shrink the image or should I stick to volume level back up?

Hi Ron,

Welcome to the forum!

There will be some compression—we typically see values around 50%, though this heavily depends on the type of source data.

However, compressing a 6TB volume down to a 2TB backup target is almost impossible. I don’t expect it will work, especially considering daily changes and regular full backup or synthetic operations in a forever forward incremental backup chain.

I recommend using our calculator to estimate your space requirements: https://www.veeam.com/calculators/simpl ... ines/agent

With a 14-day retention period, I estimate a space requirement of around 3.4TB for forever incremental and 12.7TB with weekly fullbackups . Additionally, you should have at least 1–2 full backups worth of free space in case you need to start a new backup chain or for the synthetic operations.

Best,
Fabian

Thanks, I guess I'll stick to volume level for my Gaming PC.
