Need help, One or more bad blocks were detected and skipped.

Post by Beer »

Hello, everyone,

I had a problem with veeam for windows, I've been using it for a long time.
I started a backup of my internal hard disk to an external hard disk, everything went well, one moment I got a message "One or more bad blocks were detected and skipped" I don't know why I got the message, I guess my internal hard disk and dead?

I'm wondering about something,

the backup has no errors?
he saved everything?
if I restore I won't get an error, or a missing file/corrected file?

I would recommend testing an entire system restore to a different system (a VM?) and also doing a check of the disk health with Windows or drive tools.

Thanks for your reply,

for the moment I can't restore windows fully since I can't backup, I used HDDSCAN, I have smart errors + bad block, but the computer is still working, I wanted to take the opportunity to make a backup.
I don't know how I can make a backup without error, to restore it to a new hard disk

Hello Beer.
the backup has no errors?
VAW backed up all your data blocks except data blocks allocated on the corrupted block
he saved everything?
Some files or files might be corrupted (in case they were allocated by OS on this particular bad block)
if I restore I won't get an error, or a missing file/corrected file?
Only if you hit a file that was allocated on bad block. I'd say that since backup was created successfully you definitely can perform file level recovery from it in order to restore your files.

Thanks for reply,

normally windows can't write on dead sectors? I'll save my hard disk that's dead on a new hard disk, if I have the error "One or more bad blocks were detected and skipped." it's okay? since I have some very important data I shouldn't lose them with the error, I don't understand, my windows works fine without any problems, I don't feel like I have corrupted files.

I'd suggest to run a SMART test on your hard drive with any tool (could be even your hard drive vendor tool) to properly detect the hard disk health.

If you don't already have a backup - then you can't restore elsewhere.

Maybe try a Veeam Agent job just of the file path(s) you need? (compared to an entire system backup)

Beer,

Sorry, somehow missed that SMART check has already been performed. According to the report there is one reallocated sector, so I believe that's the root cause of the warning in Veeam Agent for Windows. Can you perform scandisk /f and once it's done take another full backup? Thanks!

Sorry for the late answer, scandisk /f does not work it is not chkdsk /f ?

Reallocated sectors are a sign of dying hard drive(s). It means the sector became unusable and was reallocated.

From what can be seen in the screenshot, only one sector had a problem, but if more appear, the HDD(s) will need to be replaced.

The fact that the drive is still "usable" with bad sectors speaks to the recoverability of NTFS compared to the older file system like FAT32. Hoping ReFS is even better, though have not worked with it much yet. Glad you got your data before the whole drive bellied up.
