Password protected backup?

Post by Logan_Wolverine »

Hi guys,

In the context where you send all user backup on a network drive or VBR repo, I would like to know if endpoint backup could be protected with a password? Or is there any other mechanism preventing user X from retrieving data from user Y?

Thank you.

Hello Franck,
Backup encryption is supported only as a part of the integration with Veeam Backup and Replication repository: 5. If you want encrypt Veeam Endpoint backup files stored on the backup repository...

I'd like to voice my opinion to this issue. As soon as you use a Veeam B&R repo your backup usually will be stored in a (safe) network location. At this moment it's more or less unnecessary to encrypt your backup because you usually configure access restrictions to the network share itself. Of course, alternatively you could add each localy connected backup storage as a backup repo in Veeam B&R and use each one for each (in our case) notebook as it's own Veeam EB backup location but you must agree this sounds very strange.

Anyway, I really would acclaim a direct encryption feature in Veeam EB.

Hey Franck,
localy connected backup storage
You can use native Windows Bitlocker encryption for local storage and its supported since v1: BitLocker Encrypted Volumes Support.

Here's an example of a use case for having VEB do native encryption to local or NAS storage. For home users, a WD My Cloud device would make a good backup target. But, it doesn't encrypt its contents. So, it would be very easy for a thief to make away with your data by stealing the device.
