recovery boo-table media is not working

Post by tallpr24 »

Veeam Support - Case # 00701865

Hi
i have created boo table media to test and run a recovery from backup. none of the cd media i have created will boot up on any computer. I understand the bootable media is specific for the computer it was build for, but i see the dvd rom read the disc and after 5 min. the computer will just boot back up to windows.

any ideas on how to resolve this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

If you tried on multiple computers, then most likely reason is a faulty DVD ROM burner (or reader) drives. Please, try a bootable USB stick instead - it will hold exactly the same files, and see if that boots up.

No, actually it's universal.

Thanks!

Any chance you have not set the BIOS boot priority correctly?

Hi,

i tried 2 different computers. How can both dvd roms be bad. And yes i can boot up both on acronis recovery media and windows 8.1 so i know its not the dvd readers. I will try a usb stick and post back the results.

thanks..

Hello:

this is what i have found:

-creating bootable usb works on all workstations and laptops.
-creating a bootable disc does not work on computers with uefi firmware, computers with regular bios , it boots up ok with disc and usb
-computer with uefi firmware only boot up with usb stick
-all computer boot up perfect with acronis recovery disc and windows 7 or windows 8 installation disc

there may be something going on with the recovery media when created via disc.

any ideas?

Kenneth,
We performed several tests and could not confirm your issue. Is there any way you can create the recovery media ISO of the affected machine and share it via dropbox, google drive or any other public share (you can send me download link via PM)? This might be a silly question but when the you power on the PC and insert the CD do you see a Enter any key to boot from the CD message? Thank you.

ok, now im insulted..(off course there is an option that says "press any key to boot"

i have already explained, that all computers boot up on several different media. unless you have a special usb tool , the only way to create a bootable usb for veeam backup is to use veeam backup "create media recovery" option. for the disc you can -create a iso then burn, 0r-allow veeam to create it for you like it does with usb stick. i have created the media on several different systems with the same results. i will upload my iso to dropbox and post the link.

Hello Kenneth,
Thank you! We carefully tested your ISO with QA and Dev teams and here are the results:

CD/DVD (for both BIOS and UEFI)
- Used you iso to create a bootable media on CD media
- Checked the PC has appropriate boot order
- Insert CD to PC, reset PC
- While booting, system prompted to press any key to boot from the CD
- Once pressed the recovery appliance created on your win7 machine was booted with no issues

For USB behavior remains the same.

Kenneth,
Yes we did. We have an assumption that it might be a device specific issue. Could you describe hardware configuration of the affected PC, specifically the installed motherboard? (If it is a laptop – the vendor name and model is enough)

Once again thank you for this investigation, you are helping us to make the product better!

Thanks. Can you check if this works for toshiba satellite (https://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03F30002R01.htm)?

1. Power on the system and while the "TOSHIBA" logo appears, press [F2] key to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
2. Select [Security] tab and set the “Secure Boot” to “Disabled”.
3. Select [Advanced] tab and go to “System Configuration”.
4. Set the “Boot Mode” to “CSM Boot”.
5. Press [F10] key to save and exit.
6. Press [F12] key at "TOSHIBA" logo screen to toggle between the bootable devices and choose the medium which you want to boot from.
