Registered Storage Devices

Post by TeamInd »

I'm running version 6.1.0.349. I use an external USB hard drive to back my PC up to. The drive I was using was filling up, so I plugged in a larger external hard drive. Windows shows the external drive as drive Y:. When I go into the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows control panel and go to 'Known removable storage devices' it shows the drive as drive Z:. The backups don't work because it doesn't have the correct drive letter. There is an 'unregister' link, but that doesn't do anything.

Any ideas on how to get the drive to show up correctly?

Hello Chris,

Try to change the job settings to a local folder on a local drive, then remove the drive from known devices, then add it back and change the job settings to this drive. If that does not help - please raise a support case. Thank you!

I created a support ticket, but it was closed by Veeam and their reply was they didn't have time to answer my question.

In Windows I see the old USB drive as drive Z: and the new USB drive as drive Y:. I've copied the backup files from the Z: drive to the Y: drive. I edit the job and select the Y: drive and then I clicked the 'Map backup' link to map to the existing backup files. When I click OK I get an error dialog box that the program is blocked by group policy. I'm logged in as a domain admin, but it still blocks me. Is a separate .exe being called when the 'Map backup' link is clicked?

This is an older very long article that talks about removable devices and group policy - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previ ... dfrom=MSDN also check your local security policy and GPEDIT.msc to see if something is locking down devices :D .

Pete, your comment reminded me I had configured Netwrix PolicyPak to lock down USB storage devices. I needed to update the GPO to allow access to the external USB drive.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Registered Storage Devices -> 'Register' greyed out for previously registered devices.

driving me mad this one.

I rebuilt my pc [Windows 11 Ent 23H2, also tried previous W11 releases], the external HDD I had used previously for backup is greyed out when looking to re-add it to Veeam Agent for Windows. Previously I was using Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows on this very pc for many years happily relying on it for backup.

I have rebuilt this pc several times since to try to remedy this, including a full wipe of ALL partitions on the disk, and a reset of BIOS settings back to defaults.

I have also purchased another external HDD [Toshiba Canvio Premium 2TB, as they all are} and equally can't register this.

I have also connected a known working HDD I use from backing up another PC that works successfully with VAW on that PC, but is still greyed-out when presenting it to this PC.

I have tried VAW versions 6.1.2.134 , 6.1.0.349 , 6.0.2.1090 and in desperation 5.0.3.4708, and the result is the same in each case.

reading of previous back up files and restoring works fine on this PC, I just can't register anew for backups.

I was gonna say please help, but I don't need to, that's what this forum's for innit ?

thanks in advance, anyway.

Hello GaryGary,

You do not need to register all your removable media here unless you plan to use it as a backup destination.

You need to select the removable storage device as a target for your backup job, then it would be possible to register other rotated media. This UI basically service one purpose - to backup to specific rotated USB devices as soon as those are connected and ignore others unregistered devices.

HI,

yes, I intend to use the removable media as backup destination, as I have done for years.

however, following this rebuild(s) I can no longer register external drives, the 'register' is greyed out.

I can write to the external drive using windows file explorer, so it's not a drive permissions issue.

But I would like to get the ability to back up to my external drives working again.

thanks,

I also logged a ticket with https://www.veeam.com/blog/technical-su ... -free.html

This was their response:-

"

so looks like I haven't piqued anyone's interest with this request.

I also attempted to register an external SSD drive, and equally VAW register button is also greyed-out for that so looks like I'm stumped.

I'll be looking at alternatives to VAW now.

thanks.
