Restore from NAS really slow

Post by RcTomcat »

Support Case Nr. 05600573

Hello,

I got the following setup:
QNAP NAS with a 10Gbit Network Card and an SSD Cache as Backup Target
PC with a dedicated 10G NIC which is only used for the backup job.
Windows 11
Veeam Agent for Microsoft WSindows 5.0.3.4708

Issue:
Today I wanted to restore a Mozilla Firefox Profile from my Backup. The restore size was 1.6Gb.
Transfer rate of the restore was around 217KB/s, it took over 2 hours to restore.
The NICs were barely used, the NAS was more or less idle, my system SSD seemed bored.
I dread the thought of having to restore my whole PC with a several TB Backup one day.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what I might try to speed the process up in the future?
I know that the firefox profile contains a lot of small files but so does a windows system.

Backup Size is 1.47TB
Restore Point Size 14.6GB
Actual Data restored: 1.6GB

Thank you and have a great start into the week

Hello,
what speed do you get, when you copy a Mozilla Firefox profile directly to / from the NAS?

The speed you mention is so slow, that I assume the reason to be outside Veeam.

Best regards,
Hannes

Copying that same Profile to the NAS is done in around 15 Minutes. Speed is also quite slow due to the many small files in the profile but it is way faster than the restore. Copying from the NAS takes about the same amount of time

Just did another restore:
"appdata" local instead of the firefox profile located under roaming.
1GB with 3MB/s, done in 5 Minutes.

thanks, that was my guess. If native copy is slow, then everything "on top" is also slow. Nothing we can really do about.
