Restoring of system drive also install latest updates

Post by robertmarinsek »

Helllo.
Server got messed up with windows updates. While doing a veeam system drive restore to a date before patch release, server is restored OK, previous patches are gone from the list of patches, but last two, problematic ones, somehow get installed back automatically.
Any idea how to restore without pushing installation of last patches?
For example I did restore of server prior April patch release, and those April ones are not present on system, but the ones from May are pushed into the system somewere along restore...

Kind regards, Robert

Hi Robert

When you restore a machine with our product, we will restore the system in the exact same state as it was when the backup was taken. If on the first boot after the restore windows updates are getting installed, then those Windows updates were already downloaded and prepared when the backup was taken.

Does this also happen if you disconnect all networks before the first boot?

Thanks. I assume your machine had pending updates at the moment the backup was taken.
In case of pending updates, Windows adds information to the following keys: (disclaimer: a blog I found with google search, not an official page from Microsoft) --> https://adamtheautomator.com/pending-reboot-registry/

The information in those reg keys will be used when powering on your machine to determine which updates have to be finished.
