Restoring VM from Azure to Azure

Post by wormdoc »

Hi Team, familiar with veeam but not azure.

Have setup a B&R server in a vm within an azure tenant, i'm able to backup other vms in the same tenant using the windows agent(is this the ideal way to do this?)

I'm able to restore to the server in the same way, just wondering if the server completely died how would I restore it? I see you can use an ISO for a physical server to boot into veeams restore media then restore over the network.. how does this work with an azure VM that you cant boot from the restore media? Thanks

Hello Luke,

Unfortunately, you cannot boot Azure VM from an iso, so Bare Metal Recovery won’t help. Thankfully Veeam B&R has a dedicated type of restore - Direct Restore to Azure which works with agent backups. Please take a look at this Help Center article and let us know if you need any assistance or if you still have any questions. Cheers!

Thank you, I have tested this and it works well..

Only question is when creating a backup I get Collecting recovery media files Details: Windows recovery image file not found
Do I need to manually create a recovery image file on each VM I am going to backup?

Luke,

You can ignore this message: Recovery Media components are automatically loaded during first full backup job run which might not work for Azure VMs (but as we discussed it's not required anyway). Let me check with QA folks if it's possible to disable the RE collection to ignore this message. Stay tuned.

Hi wormdoc.

You can set the following key on the agent side to disable to RE collection: DisableRECollection = 1

wormdoc,

Should be in the Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup hive.
