Retention policy
Hi, known and work veeam in enterprise in the past and i just found out about this awesome endpoint backup. Been using it for a few days and i have one question about the retention policy.
I have it setup keep restore points for the last 5 days but i can see on my backup plan and archive that it has more than 5 days of data. When will the purge happen unless i havent understood correctly how the restore points work.
thank you very much for this awesome product.
regards,
Vassilis

Re: Retention policy
Hi Vassilis,
Have a look at this video: https://www.veeam.com/videos/backup-met ... -6251.html
I start to explain it around minute 8 (or just a bit later...)
Hope it makes more sense then
Mike

Re: Retention policy
Thanks Mike for the fast response.
In my setup isn't it suppose to purge the "5 days ago" backup and make the "4 days ago" a full and just show 5 days of available backups instead of 7 bars ?

Re: Retention policy
Hi,
It keeps backups for X days except current one. In other words you have:
15th - 2 backups (counts for one day)
16th - 1
17th - 1
18th - 1
19th - 1
20th - 1
In total there are 5 days (15,16,17,18,19) + current day (20th). Tomorrow your backups from the 15th will merge together into full and replace the very first increment of day 16.
Thank you.

Re: Retention policy
Hi Hervé,
Launch file level recovery and check how many restore points you see - it seems that you may have some orphaned increments left that are not related to the exising backup chain. Thanks.

Re: Retention policy
I think i have an orphaned file or something that i cannot pinpoint correctly on my backup.
I have "5" versions on my backup configuration.
Here is my backups now.
The first one on the left "8 days" if you click on it you can see that it says date 4/5/2016 but the restore volume and restore files are not clickable, not enabled. is this normal ?
Also on my folder i have a 1/5/16 file which just stays there and it doesn't purge. Am i missing something ?
thank you all,
Vassilis

Re: Retention policy
Vassilis,
Looks like backup session and restore point are not identical (at least by creation date). Check if you see this restore point in the file level recovery wizard.

I don't understand what you want to me to see and how
The first available option of file lever wizard is the tab "7 days ago" where i have the "restore files" option enabled.
As i said the "8 days ago" the "restore files" option is not clickable (enable)
is this what you need me to check ?

Vassilis,
Go to Start > Programs > Veeam and find the File Level Restore utility. Start it and check restore point dated 1/05 at the 'Restore Point' step of the wizard.

Re: Retention policy
Vassilis,
Most probably, this incremental file is orphaned. However, before deleting it could you open a support case and ask our team to double check.

Re: Retention policy
I already deleted it, it is an orphan. How can i check that the remaining backups are viable ? is there a consistency check that i could run to verify my backups ?
Also, one last question. The first backup from the left (6 days ago column) has the "restore files" , "restore volume" tab not clickable
I have 5 days keep version so logically the 6 days ago should not be there or it is marked as last one therefore thats why the buttons are not enabled ?

Re: Retention policy
Run a file level recovery as I suggested before. If you can start it from latest incremental restore point then backup chain to fully operational. Regarding the greyed out buttons – can you elaborate where you store your backups?

Re: Retention policy
Correct. This chart represents last backup sessions, so if the button is greyed out - this restore point is not accessible or does not exist.
