Synthetic versus Active Full Backups over slow network

Post by philfreund » Jun 30, 2017 1:47 pm

We are installing VAW on several remote sites that have very low bandwidth connectivity to our primary site. The backups will be stored on a repository in our primary site. Given the low bandwidth connection, would it be more efficient to do periodic active full backups or synthetic full backups? An active full takes about 10 hours to complete.

Hello Phil,

Indeed, synthetic full is an option. Also you may think about using a Veeam B&R backup copy jobs on the backup files stored at local repository.

I had already setup the backup copy jobs using the data stored on the local repository to store a copy on our DR site. My concern with the Synthetic Full method is that the servers on the remote site aren't very robust and thus I'm concerned that the synthetic fulls will overtax them compared to just doing an active full backup. It is the Windows Agent server that will process the synthetic full, correct?

Yes, that's true.

OK. That clarifies the situation. I guess I'll just have to try each way and look at the timings.
