Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Hi There,
Quite new to using Veeam and currently we have Veeam Backup And Replication used in our Organisation. We want to start using Veeam Endpoint Backup to backup a few Windows PC's that we have.
Now I have created a New Backup Repository on our Veeam Server (Backup And Replication), what do we need to do next then so that we can use the Backup and Replication Suite to manage the Backups and Restores on these Windows PC's
Thanks

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
We have Veeam Backup & Replication Version 8.0 Version 8.0.0.2084 so I take it we will need to upgrade somehow?

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
You're on the latest version (Update 3) of Veeam B&R v8, so there is no need to upgrade anything.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Any ideas why the Wake on Lan feature wouldn't work?
The wake on Lan feature is turned on, on the network card and is plugged in VIA Ethernet. And the setting in the BIOS has been set up. But for some reason a backup hasn't been done today as the PC was off. And I understood that the PC would wake up to do this?

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Unfortunately it won’t wake up. Wake on LAN feature works for remote server’s connections, however, software installed inside the offline machine cannot wake it up.And I understood that the PC would wake up to do this?

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Have you got any recommendations of a software that I could use to wake this PC up so it can back up overnight?
Thanks
Thanks

WolCMD from http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/wake-on-lan-cmd
Run it on your server as a scheduled task before the VEB runs.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Hi there,
Basically these are Windows PC's that we have around the organisation and there is never a consistent time where these are on. So I was thinking would it be possible to have a backup executed twice a week maybe? But id like these to happen even if the pc was off. So WOL hopefully would sort that issue for me?
We need to make sure we have consistent backups of the PC's thats the issue here.
Thanks

Use the PC bios
That is what I have done on our Dell systems and it works perfectly with the Veeam EndPoint set to shut down after backup.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Yes the End User machine. I need this to be switched on every Saturday at 3am for example and make a backup then shutdown. I know the shutdown feature is ok as the Veeam software can do this.
Its just getting the PC to switch on and back up.
Thanks everyone for the help here

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Thanks! Thinking of a possible solution: you could use log on/log off backup events to create a backups based on user activates.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
If you are OK with performing backups each time the user logs off then please check this article. You'll need to select "At the following events" - "Log Off"
If you want to utilize wake-on-LAN feature, then you need to:
1. Have it enabled in your BIOS
2. Make sure that your NIC driver is up to date
3. Follow this article
Thank you.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
You really are making life difficult for yourself....
Look in the BIOS for Auto on Time or words to that effect. On a Dell system it is under power management and select the days you want the system to power on and the time.
Set V-EP to power off after backup. I now have 5 systems doing this, all reporting back into B&R console, one of them is even using a remote repository on their end of the WAN via the local server set up as a backup proxy.

Re: Veeam B&R & Endpoint Backup
Different computers have different BIOS but if its supported on a hardware level it sounds like a perfect idea.

If you have general problems with WOL read this post on my blog:gpjonesgt wrote:Any ideas why the Wake on Lan feature wouldn't work?
