Veeam windows with B&R free

Post by nawrockip »

Hi,

Can Veeam Agent (free or paid) be used with B&R free as repository? I saw in some information that it should be possible but when I try to set it I get:
unalbe to detect available repositories. veeam backup free edition server s are not supported as backup targets

Hi Patryk,

It is supported, but you need to find the "hidden" mode of Veeam Backup Free. Have a look at this article from Luca to guide you: http://www.virtualtothecore.com/en/use- ... s-backups/

Cheers

Hi,

I've already done what is shown in article.
I have repository, option allow to everyone is selected but agent still can't backup to free edition.
Plus I don't see Agent for windows license tab.

ok, now I see how it works.
There has to be a license key installed. And for now I don't see a possibility to use Veeam Agent Free + B&R free because after agent license expires (and grace period ends) there is again info - that free edition server are not supported.

Actually, I can be wrong but I thought this was not necessary. I don't have that type of environment at my hands, but if you do, just enable the Full Functionality mode in VBR and it should work also. VEB (Free) + Backup free edition can work together so unless something has changed I see no reason why it should not work with the free edition also. The only thing is that you cannot mix licensed and non-licensed agents

Maybe something changed.
In test environment I did fresh install of B&R free, verified that there is repository with aget rigts enabled. From test pc I tried to set backup to B&R from free Agent version - no luck. I installed trial agents license into free B&R, and I was able to configure backup.
I changed date month forward so that trial license would expire. Veeam agent switched to free version but B&R said that it's in grace period. I moved date another month forward, grace period ended and I as no longer able to ser agent with B&R.

I have the same for Veeam Endpoint Backup 1.5

This behavior is expected. To run VAW licensed edition and backup to VBR repository you should install license to VBR console.

Why you changed the dates? Try to remove license from the VBR and add it back

Patryk,

You can use VBR FREE with Agent FREE to perform restores. Backup in such case should be imported to the VBR FREE.

Thank You for Your answer.
In that case we have to purchase B&R essentiials, we don't want to do backup to SMB share.

Patryk,

VBR license is not required. You can get Veeam Agent for Windows license and install it on top of Veeam B&R server. Then VBR will act in ‘agent’ mode: it will distribute license counters across all connected agents, allow to backup to Veeam repository, backup copy for agent backup files, file to tape jobs and other features.

P.S. You can test this senario with VAW 2.0 Beta and VBR 9.5 U1 FREE

But it will be less expensive to use veeam essentials + agent free, and for this client we don't need paid agent features.

Patryk,

You are the one to decide. If you don’t need the agent features and production support you can go with essentials. I am not sure, though, it’s going to be cheaper. How many agents you would like to deploy?

In such case, I think it’s a good idea to go with essential bundle. You can purchase agent license later if required

As per this link: https://go.veeam.com/promo-hybrid-cloud it shows the Veeam agent v2.0 is free just for one year.
is that correct ?
What happened after that time expires?

Hi Albert,

After that you can pay for the solution if you want to continue to use the features. Obviously you can also stop using the functionality in the paid products and go back to the free edition or stop using it at all

License managed by B&R is a Workstation license. Do I have to purchase a Workstation license when the Beta expires?

If you want to have Workstation edition than yes, otherwise you can use Free edition which does not require the license.

I want to use B&R as a repository for VAW backups. Do I have to purchase a Workstation license when the Beta expires?

Hi Technogod,

Nope, even when using a B&R repository it is not necessary to have a workstation license (you do have a VBR setup today? Licensed?). Our current version (VEB 1.5) already support this also

Thanks

I am using B&R 9.5.0.823 Free and VEB 1.5. When I try to create a backup to Veeam Backup & Replication Repository the following error occurs.

4/27/2017 1:49:05 PM :: Error: Veeam agents can only use advanced backup functionality when backing up to licensed versions of Veeam Backup & Replication.

Hi Technogod,

Are you using VEB or VAW? Or have you tested with VAW before with that same B&R server?

From what I understand you need a licensed version of either Veeam Agent or a licensed version of Veeam Backup and Replication

That is what I've found in my testing. I'm hoping once VAW is released it will be able to backup to a B&R Free repository.

No changes here - just like with VEB today, free VAW agent will not be able to backup into B&R free repository. You need to license either the agent or B&R to enable this scenario (with VEB, you had to license B&R - now with VAW you have two options). Thanks!
