Webserver Sites goes down when Veeam Agent backup is running.

Hello Guys,

I am using Veeam Agent for windows for my Server backup purpose and scheduled at mid night. But when this backup is running my all sites are not reachable and in down state. We are continuously monitoring all the sites but when backup agent is running only that time our sites are going in down state. can any one please guide me on this so we dont face such issue.

Hi Vasu.

Are you using Microsoft IIS or a 3rd party web server?
When Agent starts backup job, it triggers Microsoft VSS snapshot of the filesystem(that essentially triggers all VSS Writers on the system), which might be the reason of your case, if IIS VSS Writer has problems.

Worth checking Windows Event viewer for the moment when backup is started.

Yes We are using IIS. is there any other way to to minimize the downtime?

I have checked and it looks like VSS Writer is culprit, can anyone suggest what could be the resolution to avoid such issue.

When working properly, there should be no downtime at all.
- first, check the status "CMD > vssadmin list writers" for the state of a writer itself, before\when started\after backup job. Should be [1] Stable.
- in parallel, track down Windows Event logs related to vss(Event Source: VSS)
- you can also trigger vss snapshot manually to double check if its our product or OS behavior
