Can I safely use the same target volume for both Veeam Backup & Recovery *and* Time Machine?

I have a single ReFS volume (Windows terminology) that consumes the entirety of a thick provisioned, 2-way mirror storage space on Windows 10 for Workstations. I use this volume solely for my Veeam Backup & Recovery backup repository.

I'll be getting a new 2 TB Mac Mini (this will be my 1st Mac, so excuse my ignorance) next week and the aforementioned volume is the only CoW filesystem on this end with enough free space to backup the Mac.

I think I recall reading in the Veeam documentation years ago that Veeam backup target volumes should not be used for anything else. Is this true, or can I safely create an SMB folder on the same volume for Time Machine?

I'd rather not have to buy 3 new HDDs for my separate TrueNAS machine solely to backup the Mac.

Also, while I realize Veeam Agent Free for Mac exists, from what I understand it can backup user files only and not applications or the OS. This leaves Time Machine as my only bare metal option. Is this true, or am I missing something?

Correct.
The same „folder“ on the share must only be used by a single VBR server.
But you can create a second share for time machine. Our use different subfolders on a single share for both products.

My 2 cents on this thread:

I don't think Time Machine can write to any filesystem other than APFS, HFS+, or exFAT.
Another option would be to use Time Capsule over SMB. Please refer to this article for more information.

Correct. Mac Agent does not include bare-metal capabilities yet.
