Feature Request: Add Support for RHEL 9.8 Kernel (5.14.0‑687) in Future blksnap Module Releases

Post by Syed Tahir »

Hello Veeam Team,
I would like to request support for the RHEL 9.8 kernel version 5.14.0‑687 in an upcoming release of the blksnap snapshot module.

According to the current support statement in KB2804, Veeam Backup & Replication 13.x supports RHEL 9.x kernels up to 5.14.0‑611. Since 5.14.0‑687 is newer than the versions listed, snapshot module compatibility cannot be confirmed at this time.

The challenge we are facing is that rolling back to an older kernel is not a viable option. This kernel update was applied specifically to remediate a security vulnerability, and reverting would undo that fix. Additionally, the OS was upgraded from RHEL 9.7 to 9.8 during the process, and running a kernel from a previous point release is not supported once the OS has moved forward.

In short, reverting the kernel would both reintroduce a security risk and place the system in an unsupported configuration.

Given that other software products using dynamic kernel modules often have CI pipelines that automatically build modules for new kernel releases, it would be extremely helpful if Veeam could consider adding support for the 5.14.0‑687 kernel in a future update.

Thank you for reviewing this request. We appreciate your continued efforts to expand platform compatibility and keep pace with upstream OS updates.

Thanks
Syed Tahir

Hello Syed,

If you check KB2804 now, it already contains following lines:

RHEL 9.0-9.8 --- 5.14.0-687.10.1.el9_8 --- 13.0.2.2

Which means latest versions of VAL v13.0.2.2 supports kernel 5.14.0-687 for RHEL 9.8

And soon to be update to 5.14.0-687.12.1.el9_8
