[LINUX] Kernel 5.16 and later, veeamsnap support

Hi All,

I have the experemental code installed. However unfortunately, I cannot update the server as I get this no matter what I do:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
veeam : Depends: veeamsnap (= 5.0.0.4318) but 4.0.1.2365 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I have tried disabling the Veeam and Veeamsnap packages but this has made no difference.

Is there any progress on this?

Any ideas how I can update my server short of having to remove Veeam first?

Hi,

You can install veeam package using dpkg:

dpkg --install <file>

In this case it should ignore dependencies.

Is it possible to install the agent without the kernel module? I know there is a snapshot-less mode, but I can't use that if I can't install the agent, due to a newer kernel.

I think RedHat/Centos/AlmaLinux/RockyLinux will stay on backported 4.18 (8) so testing should include these backports.
For Fedora - I am not using it, so: openSuse/Ubuntu/Debian?
My vote is for Ubuntu, however work related agents are running on Centos/Alma/Rocky

package as well, which solved this issue perfectly. Is this a permanent package, or will this be removed once the kernel module is working again?

Yes, this is a permanent package that will stay on our public repo and will be updated accordingly. We created it specifically for cases when it is impossible to install dependencies.

Thanks PTide. Been watching this space for a while waiting for this. Any word on when this will be available for people without support contracts? I'm just using VAL for personal use backing up a couple home servers. Still deciding whether to move them to Stream or Rocky. Leaning towards the latter.

Anyway, I tried working with the github/experimental branch module but had issues. Last time this broke I was able to extract the VAL .rpms from the B&R for Windows, even though I don't use it. I assume these won't be hitting the repos for a while yet, so please do let us know when these will be generally available. Keeping my server updated, but still booting the .240. kernel so my bare metal backups continue to work.

Hopefully these recent Linux kernel snapshot issues will be in the past soon, with all due props to you and your team. Thanks for all you do.

Once the next VBR update is released - it will be included in the ISO image and will also appear on the official repository.

...and on this one. Namely, we've been receiving and noting some request regarding what could have been done better in BMR procedure - some things were obvious and we already had them on the list, but other were not. That is, it would be great to hear any input on what you'd like to be improved.

Hi there. Just to follow up on that last post, the experimental source built OK for me, but there were errors when running it. I did not have time to try and troubleshoot it, as I mentioned my use case is not mission critical and it is easy enough to just stay on the older kernel until a production fix is released.

Do you want a snapshot-less package, or you want to run VAL on CentOS/RH 8.4? If the latter then you can obtain a fix for version 8.4 via our support team. As for the snapshot-less package for RH-based distros, it's not available yet, but we could change that. What's your use-case for using it on RHEL?

A snapshot-less package same as with Debian, being able to backup (including NFS) without kernel upgrade issues. If it's in the works I can wait.

For RHEL/CentOS 8.4 please reach out to our support team so that they can give you the fix.
For deb-based distro nosnap package please get the nosnap package from here.

Overall, both RHEL/CentOS 8.4 and Debian 11 (as well as newer Ubuntus) will be supported by our veemsnap module in the next update.

It does. However, it will not accept job configurations other than snapshot-less file-level (aka "directly from live file system").

Hi all,

I just want to post that I had a positive experience with the experimental version on my Pop OS laptop(20.04 LTS edition), which runs on Thinkad P14S and has the Kernel version 5.13.0-7614-generic.
I managed to compile and install veeam snap(included with the DKMS package) and successfully backed up my thinkpad(as a snapshot) and successfully recovered it as well. Will continue testing on other distros...

Just thought I would mention that I installed Veeam-5.0.1.4493-1.el8.x86_64.rpm and Kmod-veeamsnap-5.0.1.4493-1.el8.x86_64.rpm (I extracted them from the VALredist.msi in the 11a B&R ISO) on my CentOS 8.4 box with the latest kernel today and everything is working again!

Still not working on debian 11 for me

I tried to install 5.0.1.4493 veeam and veeamsnap extracted from 11a B&R iso , everything installed without errors , but i try to make a backup i get an error saying it cannot perform a snapshot, system.map not found.

Quick Google search shows that Debian 11 decided to drop system.map for some reason and you need to install some debug package to bring it back.

No worries. But the way, this is all very unofficial heheh ! I firstly tried to install the agent through Veeam Backup & Replication software and I got a message saying Debian 11 full machine ( snapshots ) is not supported. Only file backups seem to be officially supported. Probably because of this issue and the fact that not many people will haver Kernel dbg installed.
