[SOLARIS] Memory requirements changed from 3.x to 4.1?
Hello Veeam!
Have the memory requirements to backup a large number of files with the Agent for Solaris changed between 3.x and 4.1? In the 3.x documentation, there was a table listing the required memory: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/archive/ag ... s_ram.html
In the 4.1 documentation, this table is no longer included. However, I see no mention of any change in memory requirements: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/agent ... tml?ver=40
Thanks!

Hello VAB,
Due to algorithm design changes implemented in version 4.1, the RAM requirements for large numbers of files in Veeam Agent for Oracle Solaris have been simplified. Now, users simply need to adhere to the minimum values specified in the User Guide.

Thanks Rovshan!
Unfortunately I am seeing just the opposite. I am backing up ~500k files as I write. The resident set size of veeamagent is currently 4431MB. Adding the memory consumed by veeamjobman and veeamservice, the backup job is using 4.5 GB of resident memory. The old table showed a requirement of 2 GB for 1m files.
I have application processes failing malloc() because there is no more free memory. This should not happen on a 16 GB system with 500k files. ZFS ARC has around 1.3 G. My job is around ~60%, it will eventually fail around 80%.
Something has gotten worse from 3.x to 4.1. I'll have our service provider file a bug.

Hi Rovshan!
Case ID is 07082741. So far, I have been asked to reduce CPU and I/O rates. Not sure how that will affect the memory leak. We will know more once the tests are done.
Cheers,
VAB

The test has completed. As expected, increasing CPU rate to max and setting ioRateLimit to min did not affect the memory leak. The "veeamagent" process consumed all virtual memory on the system, causing application processes to crash, then failing itself. Veeam support has asked me to rerun the test in debug mode, which I am currently doing.

Re: [SOLARIS] Memory requirements changed from 3.x to 4.1?
Unfortunately, Veeam Support still does not acknowledge that there is a memory leak. Instead, I am being asked to reduce the block size in our backup jobs from 8k to the default of 1k. While I could to this, as far as I know this would mean deleting and recreating all jobs, thus losing all backups...
IMHO backup software must work will all advertised settings of every parameter...

Thanks Rovshan!
I am happy to provide more output to help diagnose this, run dtrace probes, etc.
Regards,
VAB

Re: [SOLARIS] Memory requirements changed from 3.x to 4.1?
A test job using the default 1k block size instead of 8k did indeed complete successfully without exhausting all memory. So I am cautiously optimistic that Veeam will fix this bug soon.

Here is some more good news: The test build 1409 seems to have fixed the memory leak.
